I tried to quell the familiar pang of disappointment as daddy told me for the fifth time what I didn't want to hear. Take care of it, then we'll braid it. I lifted the frizzy mass of hair tied back with a ponytail and eyed it.
I believe I was in junior high at that point. Right at the brink of 'I can do it' and not quite past 'I need your help'. My mother still helped me get through my hair, as it was ridiculously long and a nuisance at the time. I remember either hearing that I had the hair that everyone wanted, or that I must want my hair straight. I always lea
